Local Information

Puerto Vieja De Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Puerto Vieja de Sarapiqui is the capital city of the largest county in the Costa Rican province of Heredia, situated just thirty kilometers south of the border with Nicaragua and between the convergence of the Sarapiqui River and Puerto Vieja River. Puerto Vierja de Sarapiqui is an increasingly popular tourist destination, particularly with adventure seekers attracted by its ever more famous white water rafting trips down the Sarapiqui River.

Other than thrill seekers, more eco-friendly tourists are also attracted to the area because of its large number of nearby nature and wildlife reserves. Once a quiet little town, Puerto Vieja de Sarapiqui is rapidly emerging as one of Costa Rica's most important tourist areas, and offers innumerable activities for visitors including bird watching, hiking, kayaking and of course the aforementioned white water rafting.

The area also has several beautiful butterfly gardens and banana plantations. Accommodation is not a problem, with an array of hotels, lodges and luxury villas in the neighborhood, and plenty of bars and restaurants as well. Puerto Vieja de Sarapiqui is located on the northern plains and is surrounded on all sides by both verdant forests and numerous agricultural plantations. The town is accessible by various routes, from San Jose via Santa Clara and then heading north to Tigre, or by the wonderfully scenic route offered along the road to San Miguel from Brava alongside the Poas Volcano and then onwards.

The area is also not too far away from the Braullio National Park, another must see destination for any tourists.
