Rosario de Naranjo, Costa Rica
Located around seventeen miles from the Juan Santa Maria Airport, Rosario de Naranjo is situated in the heart of the Costa Rican Coffee region. Naranjo is the sixth canton of the province of Alajuela, covering an area of over a hundred and twenty six kilometres, and has a population of over forty six thousand people. El Rosario is one of its nine districts, a small fishing village.
The other districts include Naranjo de Alajuela, San Miguel, San Jose, Cirri Sur, San Jeronimo and San Juan. The canton was officially created on the ninth of March in the year of 1886. There are many rivers in the canton, including the Rio Grande (Great River), which forms the southern and western boundaries of the area, the Rio Colorado (Red River) and the Rip Molino (Mill River) which form the eastern border and the Rio Espino (Thornbush River) on the north.
Some of the major attractions in the El Rosario de Naranjo area are the tropical botanical gardens, featuring butterflies, exotic birds and private waterfall which can be found at a nearby exclusive hotel. There are few other accommodations or attractions in the area, although there may be some camping spots, and El Rosario is an ideal spot for 'jumping off' and exploring the surrounding towns.
While it is not the most accessible place in Costa Rica, the town itself is ideal for the observation of real middle class life in Costa Rica and there are numerous citrus plantations found in the surrounding areas.
