Local Information

Grecia, Costa Rica

The capital city of the canton of Grecia in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica, Grecia is located in the foothills of the Cordillera Central on the eastern side of the Central Valley, nine hundred and ninety nine meters above sea level. Described as "the cleanest city in Central America", Grecia lies to the northwest of San Jose and features beautiful mountain landscapes and richly lush scenery including an immaculate central park with enormous shade trees. The climate is breezy and fresh, meaning that the weather is cool and the unspoiled environment is green almost all year round.

One of the town's biggest tourist attractions is the Cathedral de la Mercedes, a huge Gothic church made out of metal pieces which was imported from Belgium in the 1890s and has a deeply distinctive dark red appearance. Other attractions for tourists in Grecia include the Grecia Regional Museum, an insect and butterfly museum that hosts over fifty thousand different varieties of insects and butterflies. There are a couple of other major tourist destinations in the area that lie just outside of town. One of them lies about a kilometer away on the Alajuela road, in the form of the "World of Snakes" serpentarium, which plays host to over fifty different kinds of snakes from all around the world, while about a day trip away are the waterfalls of Cataratas Los Chorros in Tucares de Grecia.

Grecia is accessible by road just of the Panamerican Highway. Grecia is one place that any tourists to Costa Rica should definitely put on their 'to do' list.
