Pavones Costa Rica
Until thirty years ago only the indigenous people of Costa Rica had a right to live in Pavones. Then the Costa Rican government decided to change the status of that region. The government declared Pavones to be "tierra liebre," which means free land. By the mid 1970's some non-indigenous people had established homes in Pavones.
Those early homes sheltered families living a very primitive lifestyle. Those early dwelling were thatched-roof houses. The families living in those houses had adopted an agrarian culture. They grew all of their own food, and they cooked that food with wood-fueled fires.
Those early families faced the threat of attack by jaguar. In order to prevent such an attack, the families had to burn their fires 24 hours a day, even when not cooking. If someone were hurt by a jaguar, the nearest doctor was 4 hours away.
Then in 1978 a surfer rode in a plane that passed over Pavones. That surfer noted the left-break hitting the beaches of Pavones. That surfer wanted to accept the challenge delivered by that left break. Word about the surf in Pavones soon spread within the surfing community.
Not long after the surfers started arriving in Pavones, an enterprising soul opened a Cantina for surfers. The surfers loved the waves at Pavones, and they shared their wave tales with other surfers. More and more surfers came to Pavones. Some took up residence in Pavones.
Eventually the residents of Pavones realized that they wanted to limit the amount of development that took place within their growing city. As a result, the residents of Pavones organized some reforestation and conservation projects. Such projects had a single goal: retaining the peaceful, uncluttered atmosphere of Pavones.
