Playa Matapalo Costa Rica
Twenty miles south of the hustle and bustle of Manuel Antonio is the peaceful and relaxing Oceanside village of Playa Matapalo. Unlike most of Costa Rica's beach community's Playa Matapalo remains largely hidden to the motorists on the Pacific Road. Motorists often bypass Playa Matapalo, driving swiftly past the sign that is just one mile from the town of Matapalo.
Yet even when one knows how to get to Playa Matapalo, the drive to that seaside community can be long and troublesome. Playa Matapalo lies on the dirt road that connects the cities of Manuel Antonio and Dominical. Along that dirt road are spots where the road crosses a stream or river. While no bridge is very long, all of those bridges allow the bridge traffic to proceed in just one direction. As a result, the trip from Manuel Antonio to Playa Matapalo takes between 45 minutes and one hour.
For a fisherman, the rigors of that trip give way to great excitement and rewards as well. Not far from Playa Matapalo is the Portalon river mouth. Fishing is terrific at that location. A fisherman who casts his line in the waters of Portalon should have no trouble reeling in snook, red snapper and black snapper.
On land, a naturalist should have no trouble observing some of the local fauna. The absence of any big city traffic causes much of the wildlife to enter the town proper. Sloths, iguanas, monkeys and toucans can all be seen in the center of Playa Matapalo.
