Playa Islita
Located around thirteen kilometers to the southwest of Carillo in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica is Playa Islita, a pebbly, small but beautiful black sand beach positioned between soaring headlands. With Camaronal Beach to the west and Bejuco Beach on its east, Playa Islita is separated from the equally beautiful beach of Corozalita by towering, eighty million year old cliffs of volcanic rock that have been constantly shaped over the millennia by pounding of the sea.
Playa Islita is itself a kilometer long, lying in a small cove that receives its water from two streams that have created small estuaries that are highly suitable for bathing in during the warmer months. The beach offers quaint tidal pools featuring nerites, sea urchins and various kinds of tropical fish. Many species of wildlife can be observed in the area, including armadillos, hawks, magpies, monkeys, parakeets and even coatis. Leatherback and hawksbill turtles can also be spotted nesting at Islita, usually during the month of October.
Playa Islita is accessible from Corozalita by an extraordinarily beautiful and picturesque road that rambles through wooded hills that are a hundred and forty meters above sea level and provide extraordinary vivid red sunsets for those lucky enough to be traveling on it at the right time of day. It can be also reached via the highly unusual and convenient method of having its own private airstrip. The most popular activity in this secluded and scarcely populated area is without a doubt scuba diving.
