Tilaran, Costa Rica
Located in the northeastern regions of the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, Tilaran is a breezy, charming little town that serves as a focal point for transportation but is also an ideal place for stay for tourists interested in the nearby Laguna de Arenal, which is situated just five kilometers away. Located on the edge of the volcano, the man made lake, which serves as the biggest and most successful hydroelectric project in Costa Rica is also the perfect location for keen windsurfers to practice their favorite hobby.
High winds span a group of windmills with an energy producing wind turbine producing enough energy to provide for forty percent of the country's entire electricity needs, and the place is easily accessible via regular buses from Tilaran. The high season for windsurfers and other watersports activities on the lake is between December and May, peaking in April. There are lessons available for new windsurfers and kiteboarders, as well as canopy tours, trips to Viento Fresco Waterfalls, horseback riding tours and boat trips to the volcano and hot springs.
There are a lot of tourist accommodations in Tilaran, ranging from expensive hotels to more budget friendly bed and breakfast establishments. The town has its own supermarket as well as a fresh air market which sells such local produce as cornida tipica and Chorreadas (a sort of a cross between crepes and tortillas, stuffed with either cheese or cream), restaurants, cabins, coastal vessels and fishing areas. The town is also a notable farming area for coffee, macadamia nuts and peanuts, and has a consistently cool and comfortable year round temperature.
All in all, Tilaran is one of Costa Rica's least shouted about gems and an ideal choice for a peaceful vacation for both individuals and families.
