Playa Ostional Costa Rica
Eight km north of Playa Nosara is Playa Ostional. During the rainy season you can still reach Playa Ostional but only from Junquillal and you will need a 4X4 vehicle. Ostional is small coastal beach town that hosts the national wildlife refuge. The refuge is a narrow strip about eight km long and only a few hundred meters wide.
The main attraction of the refuge and the reason it was created is the annual nesting of the olive ridley sea turtle. Playa Ostional and Playa Nancite in the Santa Rosa National Park are the two most important nesting ground for the olive ridley in Costa Rica. The turtles nesting season is between July to November with August and October being the peak months. The turtles typically arrive in large groups of hundred to thousands and occur every three to four week. They stay for about a week and there are trained villagers who will guide you to the best places to view the turtles.
The rainy season in Ostional lasts from May to December with an annual rainfall of about 2,000 mm. It is during the rainy season that you have the best chance of seeing the turtles. However, you have to be prepared if you are going during the rainy season. At this time the average daytime temperature is twenty-eight degrees Celsius.
There is the Cabinas Ostional which is a hotel with six rooms and showers. It has a backyard that is in front of the only restaurant in town. During the rainy season you should also be aware of strong waves and riptides in the area. You should not swim on this beach.
