Drake, Costa Rica
Drake, also known as Drake Bay, lies on the northern side of the Osa Peninsula in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica. This small town is one of the most famous destinations in the whole country, yet paradoxically is also one of the most difficult to access, only reachable via boat and with a very small number of lodges and cabins available to rent in the area. Those that are available tend to offer inclusive holiday packages as well as their own pick-up services from nearby areas such as Sierpe.
Getting there may be a challenge, but the journey is most assuredly worth the effort. Among the many activities on display are horseback riding, sports fishing, bird watching, canoeing and kayaking, as well as several superb hiking trails to some stunning and isolated beaches.
Drake is the gateway to the Corvocado National Park, which offers the tallest primary rainforest in the entire world as well as housing countless endangered animal and bird species and much local fauna and wildlife. Drake is also located not far from the biological reserve located on the Isla del Cano, which is well renowned for its excellent scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, with an array of underwater delights including the chance to swim alongside dolphins and extraordinarily beautiful and colorful tropical fish.
Drake is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and exotic places to visit in the whole of Costa Rica and is, alongside the rest of the Osa Peninsula, "one of the most biologically intense places on Earth" (National Geographic Magazine).
