La Cruz Costa Rica
La Cruz is located a hundred and seventy-two miles northwest of the capital of San Jose. It is a small hilltop town near the Nicaraguan border. There is little to do in the town aside from enjoy the beautiful views of Bahia Salinas. However, it is a gateway to the beaches below the mountain that are almost always deserted. There are a few mountain lodges that are nearby in Santa Rosa and on the border of the Guanacaste National Park.
There is not a whole lot to do in La Cruz other than enjoy the sunset and wonderful food at the El Mirador Ehecatl. This is small restaurant that has a great views of Bahia Salinas and has high standards for their food at only slightly high prices.
If you plan on staying in La Cruz instead of at a nearby town or lodge then you should look into Amalia's Inn or the Hotel Bella Vista. Both of these are simple little hotels with small pools and good views of the bay.
The annual Windwing Kite Event "Windy Passions". For those yearning for a combination of ocean and lake kiting, this exciting two week program takes advantage of the strong seasonal winds of Bahia Salinas and Lake Arenal during the February-March. Based at the ecologically sensitive resort which features 6 private, secluded villas each varying in size with between 1 and 5 bedrooms or suites for a total of 25 bedrooms with bathrooms; all villas have balconies and a private infinity or plunge pool. See villas above to reserve.
The closest airport to La Cruz that has regular flights is in Liberia. If you are going to travel by car then you take the Inter-American Highway west from San Jose and just follow the signs for the Nicaraguan border or the Guanacaste beaches. Once you reach Liberia then you head straight through the only major intersection and follow the signs to the Penas Blancas and the Nicaraguan border. It takes about five hours by car to get from San Jose to La Cruz.
In San Jose you can catch a bus that leaves for Penas Blances at five, seven, seven-forty-five and ten-thirty in the morning or one-thirty and four in the evening. All of these buses make stops in La Cruz and will also let you off in the town of Santa Rosa. The bus ride typically takes six hours and costs about five dollars.
