The most prominent tourist attraction in the Barra del Colorado is without a doubt the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, a popular destination with both adventurers and eco-tourists because of the sheer number of activities available there, including bird watching, canoeing and sports fishing (it has been voted one of the top ten places to fish in the whole world), in addition to just the sheer multitude and variety of the natural local wildlife on display for all to see. The town is also a good stopping off point for those wishing to cross over into Nicaragua.

Most of the accommodations in the Barra del Colorado, including hotels and lodges, are in the Barra del Norte, the northern area of the town, though the town's airport actually lies in the south, and it is from there that the Barra del Colarado is best accessed by tourists. There are no roads surrounding the town, so the only way to visit is either from the airport or by boat. Walking on the outskirts of town is strongly advised against, due to the area's swampy nature.
