Local Information

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Puntarenas, which means "Sandy Point" in Spanish, is the capital and largest city in the Puntarenas Province. Villa Bruselas as Puntarenas was first known was the first port on the Costa Rican west coast and exported coffee from the inland highlands. With the railroad connection to the Central Valley, the Pacific port's activities continued to be a major part of the region's economy throughout the 20th century. Since 1981 the port city has lost its importance as a west coast shipping Mecca do to the new port built- Puerto Caldera, about 18km southeast of Puntarenas. The city of Puntarenas is now a commercial fishing port offering visitors some of the most delicious fresh seafood in the country, including fish, lobster and shrimp.

When traveling from San Jose to the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Puntarenas ferry terminal does provide the cheapest option for reaching the beaches of Tambor, Santa Teresa and Mal Pais.

Puntarenas is a gateway to a wealth of unspoiled natural wonders and one of the spectacular Disney Cruise Line ports of call on a Disney Mexican Riviera Cruise vacation. Another point of interest when visiting Puntarenas would be the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve which is a short distance away and is the home of the world's most handsomely plumages bird "the Resplendent Quetzal". One of the most visited cloud forest in Costa Rica, Monteverde is home to a unique tropical zone that should not be missed when traveling the area. The chance of walking through Monteverde's Cloud Forest and finding the quetzal in the mist is enough enchantment that could last a lifetime!

The beaches of Puntarenas offer surfing, snorkeling and fishing. For a peaceful refuge to soak up the sun, swim or snorkel, ride a ferry to Isla Tortuga, an island known for its immaculate white sand beach and turquoise waters. Enjoy beautiful historic buildings, fine dining and souvenir shopping in the downtown areas. Head to Puntarenas' Paseo de Turistas for a broad walkway with stone benches, food kiosks, bars and live music.

Puntarenas's central location and its close proximity to San Jose makes it the perfect base for daily travel between several different locals in Costa Rica. Puntarenas has a wide variety of accommodations including vacation rentals, hotels, eco lodges, spas and resorts.
