Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuguero, located on the North Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, is a village in the Limon Province. Named for the fact that its beaches are vital nesting places for two of the world's most endangered kinds of sea turtle (Tortuguero roughly translates as "Land of Turtles", the village is sustained by its eco-tourism industry, being very close to the Tortuguero National Park and two biological stations, the Cano Palma Biological Station and the John H. Phipps Biological Field Station, both of which focus on the conservation of the local ecology, particularly the turtles.
The Tortuguero National Park is the third most visited National Park in the whole of Costa Rica, with canals, beaches, lagoons and rivers and an incredibly diversity of biological specimens including fifty seven species of amphibians, one hundred and eleven species of reptiles, three hundred and nine species of birds, thirty species of fresh fish including the Gar (which is widely regarded as a "living fossil"), and sixty species of mammals.
Attractions include turtle tours (between April and October, tourists will even be able to witness the giant seat turtles laying their eggs on the beach), canal tours, guided walks through the National Park, hiking Tortuguero Hill or touring the village, visiting the Turtle Museum at the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) or just relaxing on the beach and taking a swim in the ocean.
Access to the village is available only by boat or aeroplane. There are various accommodations available, including hotels and other lodgings, with camping particularly encouraged at the Cuatro Esquinas Headquarters on the north end of the town.
