Vacationing in Limon Costa Rica
The country's most important port, Puerto Limon was founded in 1870 as a port city to export bananas and grains from Costa Rica to various parts of the globe. One of the oldest cities on the continent, Puerto Limon was established in 1502 when Christopher Columbus landed here during his exploration of the New World. Located in Limon province along the Caribbean coast, Puerto Limon is the provincial capital of Limon and lies some 160 km east of the city of San Jose.
It is that country's main Caribbean port, and has a population of around 105,000 (including many neighboring small cities). The city, and the province in general, is home to most of Costa Rica's citizens of African descent. Originally from Jamaica, these workers were brought to the area in the late 19th century to build the railroad line from San Jose to Limon. The train boosted the country's banana exports and economy in general. By the time the line was closed, the city was the country's primary harbor.
Limon is the host of one of Costa Rica's most famous carnivals called Dia de las Culturas. The festival's purpose is to celebrate Costa Rica's diverse culture but is a wild crazy Mardi Gras type party. Every October 100,000 people including tourist, Ticos, backpackers, and hippies make their way to Limon to enjoy the celebration.
