Cartago Cost Rica
Cartago is located about fifteen miles southeast of San Jose and used to be the capital of Costa Rica. The town was founded in 1563 and for almost a hundred and fifty years it was the first and only city in Costa Rica. At the edge of the town there is the Irazu Volcano and today the volcano is quiet. Over the years earthquakes have damaged the city so few of the old colonial buildings still remain.
The center of the city features a public park that winds through the ruins of a large church destroyed in 1910 before construction was completed. After an earthquake the church construction was abandoned. The park is neatly manicured and have many quiet paths and benches for those who want to relax and enjoy nature.
The most famous building in Cartago is the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles which is dedicated to the patron saint of Costa Rica and is on the east side of the town. This is a Byzantine-style church that contains the tiny figure of La Negrita, the Black Virgin.
About a half mile east of Cartago on the road that leads to the town of Paraiso you can find the Lankester Gardens. This is a botanical garden that is known for its orchid collection.
You can take a bus from San Jose to Cartago after your plane lands. Buses leave every five to ten minutes and are available between five in the morning and midnight. There is also the option of picking up a bus en route at one of the several covered bus stops along the way. The length of the bus trip is forty-five minutes and costs about forty-five cents.
