Monteverde Costa Rica - A forest in the Clouds
Monteverde, Costa Rica is one of last ecological bastion of the world where exotic flora and fauna still exist. With its lush vegetation and dense forest areas, Monteverde is one of the world premiere ecotourism destinations. Moteverde is known mostly as a cloud forest instead of a rain forest because of its altitude. The clouds literally goes through the forest, thus the name cloud forest.
Acclaimed as one of the most outstanding wildlife refuges in the New World Tropics, Monteverde cloud forest is alive with hundreds and hundreds of species of flora and fauna. More than 100 species of mammals including 5 species of cats live the cloud forest and over 400 species of bird including 30 kinds of hummingbirds can be found in this area.
There are many things which you can see and do in Monteverde. Thus, it is advised that if you visit the place, you should try to stay for a few days and explore the forest at a leisurely pace. Its no use to breeze through the place as you will not be able to appreciate its beauty properly. As all nature takes its own time, you need patients and ample of extra time to get the best out of the place. For instance, there are over 5,000 species of moths in the forest and you will need to spend ample time to spot most of them. Visit the Bat Jungle, the first of its kind !!!!
Designed to immerse the visitor into the incredible world of bats. Take a tour through a bat-tastic exhibit where live bats fly in a simulated jungle environment, reversed in their day/night cycle.
For those who would like to stay for a few days or longer in Monteverde, make sure to bring a warm jacket, rain gear and sensible footwear for trail use. As the trails are well maintained, you don't really need to wear boots unless you plan to venture deep into the forest. A word of advice through, don't wander into the forest alone. Getting lost in the Monteverde cloud forest is no fun specially when it rains really hard. And don't forget to bring insect repellants. Mosquitoes could really be uncomfortable.
