Playa Avellanas
Situated about ten kilometers to the south of Tamarindo in the Guanacaste province is Playa Avellanas, which features a popular beach that is widely regarded as one of the best surfing locations in Costa Rica and a dream spot for any surfer with its offshore swells that have been known to rise as high as eighteen feet, and eight different surf breaks (both left and right) that can be found along the sea shore. The locals refer to Playa Avellanas as "Little Hawaii" and after people have spent some time there, they do not find it difficult to see why.
Playa Avellanas is also a perfect place for those who just want to kick back and relax and take in the sun. If you're not a surfer, that does not mean Playa Avellanas has no other activities for you to enjoy, however; horseback riding is one of the many other activities you can partake in, along with a trip to the local bar. One of the more unusual attractions a tourist just has to see at Playa Avellanas is Lola, a four hundred kilogram pig who likes hanging out in the beach's shallow surf!
Accommodations are fairly affordable and cheap as well, although there are also more expensive options for those who like that little bit of extra luxury. It should be noted, however, that accessibility to Playa Avellanas could be improved, with the beach at present surrounded by unpaved dirt. A four wheeled drive would be advisable transport for anyone attempting to reach the beach, but those who make the trip will no doubt find it well worth the effort.
