Nicoya
A town in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, Nicoya is one of the country's most important tourist spots, functioning as the cultural centre of the region and as a hub of transportation to the region's national parks and beaches. Over thirteen thousand people live and work in Nicoya, which is built in an old colonial fashion, and the indigenous heritage of the area is still strong in its traditions.
There are numerous attractions for tourists, including the Parroquia San Blas, the oldest church in Costa Rica (founded in 1644) which now also serves as a small museum containing many ancient religious artifacts, and the La Case de Culture, a gallery which showcases the work of local artists, although the city often primarily functions as a centre from which to explore the surrounding areas, which can be achieved with the many nature tours on offer, including to the nearby nature reserve of Barra Honda, or eco-tours to the Monte Alto Nature Reserve.
There are many hotels in the area, the majority of which are quite reasonably priced for the average tourist, as well as numerous shops, supermarkets, banks, stores and open air markets. In the month of July, the city comes alive with music and parties thanks to the annual Dia de Guanacaste festival. Tourists may even want to consider settling down in Nicoya, as in 2006 the city was designated as a 'Blue Zone' by National Geographic Magazine, the National Institute for Aging, and Allianz Healthcare, meaning it is a region with some of the longest life expectancies of anywhere in the world.
