Costa Rica Central Pacific ActivitiesPunteranas
The province of Punteranas is situated in the central Pacific region of Costa Rica. The word “punteranas” means ‘sandy point’ in Spanish. The capital of the province bears the same name and is the largest city of the province. It has a busy and important port, which is called Caldera.
The islands located in the Gulf of Nicoya are in the province of Punteranas. The mountain ranges of the Tilaran and Talamanca are also favorite tourist spots.
Most of the visitors who travel through the fascinating islands of the gulf, biological reserves, the exotic Nicoya Peninsula and through the estuary canals which are rich in scenic and natural beauty, have their point of departure at Punteranas, hence it is well known to tourists.
Punteranas is famous for its sandy beaches lined along the Pacific Ocean and is a great attraction for tourists especially surfers. Punteranas is ideal for a tranquil holiday, especially if you just want to stroll or surf the fine beaches or occasionally indulge in fishing from the water’s edge. The city is on a long, narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya.
The beach is full of waterfront restaurants and bars. On weekends the small town of Punteranas is filled with life by the influx of tourists, especially from the neighboring towns. The open-air cafes offer exquisite desserts, refreshments, ice-creams and fresh fruit drinks.
Since it is the country’s most important fishing port, Punteranas is the ideal place to enjoy fresh seafood. Some specialties of this area are the shrimp scampi, a whole fried fish called pescado entero or bits of fresh fish marinated in lemon juice with onions, peppers and spices called ceviche de corvine which is a Costa Rican delicacy.
